Mogadishu (HOL) – Heavy fighting between Galmudug security forces and Ahlu Sunnah Wal Jama’a militia erupted in Dhusamareb, the capital of Galmudug.
Reports indicate that the militia has attacked army bases in the town in the early hours of Friday, with no casualties reported.
Galmudug security officials said that the security forces foiled the militia’s attacks on the army bases. They added that the fighting continues in small areas as the Galmudug forces pursue the fighters.
The fighting comes as Galmudug state leaders are in Mogadishu, where the country’s presidential election will take place on Sunday.
Since Sufi militia was ousted from Guri-El, they have been mobilizing fighters in the village of Bohol, 20 km north of Dhusamareb town.
Last year’s fighting in Guri-El between Galmudug and Ahlu Sunnah killed 120 people and injured 600 others, a senior ASWJ official said. The United Nations said in a statement the fighting had displaced at least 100,000 people.
