Mogadishu (HOL) – Somalia’s lawmakers, who are meeting on Wednesday at the airport hangar in Mogadishu, will listen to the speeches of 20 candidates for the presidency of Somalia.
Thirty-nine candidates have registered, including incumbent President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed Farmaajo and two former presidents, Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud and Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed.
Each candidate is allocated 15 minutes. Nineteen other candidates will deliver speeches to showcase their policies on Thursday.
It is the highest number of presidential candidates in Somalia’s history. In 2000, 16 candidates ran for president; in 2004, there were 26 candidates; in 2009, there were 11 candidates; in 2012, there were 22 candidates; and in 2017, there were 21 candidates.
